Frequently Asked Questions

This is my first time. What can I expect? What should I wear?

Session 1: Throwing
● This is the wet work at the wheel where you create your initial shape.
● Wear comfortable but not overly loose clothing (workout clothing is ok). You will likely get messy. We recommend leaving jewelry and watches at home. For safety reasons, long hair and any dangling objects (necklaces, hoodie strings, etc), should be either tucked away or removed.
● We do have a few aprons available for use on request.

Session 2: Trimming
● After a piece firms up for a few days to “leather hard,” we trim pieces with hand tools to cut away excess clay, to refine the final shape, and to add a foot.
● Trimming is done when the clay is no longer sticky and wet, so it is much less messy than throwing. Everyday clothing is fine, but for safety reasons, long hair and any dangling objects (necklaces, hoodie strings, etc.) should be tucked away or removed.

Session 3: Glazing
● Glazing is done after a piece is thrown, trimmed, dried, and kiln fired.
● We use commercial brush on glazes.
● This step is the least messy and regular clothes are fine.

How long before I get my final pieces?

From start to finish, you can expect your pieces to take between 2-3 weeks for completion. Your pieces will need to fully dry and go through two firings (a bisque firing and a glaze firing) to be complete and ready to take home. Timing can be impacted by the weather and our firing schedule. Please discuss with Thrown staff if you have any specific timing concerns.

Will you teach my child how to throw on a pottery wheel? Do you host kids parties?

We are an adult studio first and foremost, however, on a case by case basis we may work with children aged 10+ one on one. Please expect to sign your child up for a 1 hour handbuilding session; this will allow us to assess whether your child would be a good fit for our studio; after this session, your child may be invited to sign up for additional 1 hour wheel-throwing sessions.

Sorry, we are only set up to accommodate 1-2 students at a time.

Do you offer firing services? What temperature do you fire to?

We are a Cone 6 studio. Firings are included for our students and renters, with the exception of discounted Just Practice throwers. Unfortunately at this time we cannot offer firing for the wider community.

Do you sell clay in bulk?

Sorry, we only sell clay in small quantities to our students.
